We left Hoi An and flew from Danang through Saigon to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We checked into a hotel room that was literally as big as our entire apartment, with a view out the window of the Royal Palace and a local Wat (Temple).
We had a huge day in the city. We learned about the reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge during the 70s and 80s in Cambodia. We drove 30 miles out of the city to one of the Killing Fields and toured the area with a guide, who described the macabre killings that took place by young brainwashed soldiers of the populace, and showed us a display of a tower of skulls of people who had died there.
Back in town, we toured Tuol Seng - a school that had been converted into a site for torture and interrogations of intellectuals. It was a chilling history that struck us for how recent it was.
We took a breather back at the hotel and ate some Cambodian food wrapped in a huge banana leaf.
