Southeast Asia Part Eight: Elephants!

We set to work finding a tour of the area surrounding Luang Prabang. We drove about an hour outside of town to a small village, walked down to the water, and took a tiny boat downstream. We then walked into the woods and there they were... the Elephants! Viola's new favorite animal.

Eric and Viola and I rode on a big one, and they gave the baby to Joe, which was a sight to behold, since he didn't look so small riding on the back of the tiny beast. The terrain was insane - the elephants stumbled and practically lost their footing through a slippery river by a series of waterfalls and then up and around the forest.

When we returned from the short trek, the elephants were let out of their harnesses and Eric got to give one of them a bath and ride it bareback. Viola got to feed one of the elephants, who grabbed a banana right out of her hand and she freaked out and started screaming. It was short-lived. All in all she was pretty amazed and overwhelmed by them. This was one of our best days of the trip.
